Minister of Culture

In July 1988, the Minister of Culture Javier Solana called Jorge Semprún to inform him that the Prime Minister Felipe González intended to appoint him as his successor in the ministry of culture. Semprún accepted the post.

It was a time of great cultural effervescence and important agreements were negotiated during his term of office: the first loan agreements for works from the Thyssen collection, negotiations with the Dalí legacy, the opening of the Cine Doré as the headquarters of the Filmoteca Española. However, they were also challenging years, not without controversy, and he was forced to resign as minister in March 1991.
